Novy Urengoy

In the middle of Siberia, 3,500 kilometres north east of Moscow lies the city of Novy Urengoy - and one of the largest natural gas fields in the world. 110,000 people live in this remote city where temperatures are below freezing for at least 250 days of the year and where the thermometer drops to 60 degrees Celsius below zero in winter.

Sleighs and tractors were used to transport the sections of the gas production plants over the icy expanse to the Urengoy field, where pioneer settlements consisting of simple huts were set up. Today, the full extent of this wealth can be seen by looking from above in a helicopter, where it is possible to see the drilling installations and flares stretching far into the horizon. The expansive Urengoy gas field measures over 250 kilometres long and up to 60 kilometres wide.
